How to Root Cuttings in LECA vs Water

How to Root Cuttings in LECA vs Water

Rooting houseplant cuttings is one of the easiest ways to grow your collection. The two most common methods are placing your cuttings in water or using LECA. Both work, but they behave differently and have different strengths.

Here is a simple breakdown to help you choose the right method and avoid slow or failed rooting.

Rooting in water

Water propagation is the most beginner friendly method. All you need is a jar, clean water, and a healthy cutting.

Pros
Easy to set up
Low cost
You can see the roots forming

Cons
Roots may struggle to adapt to soil or LECA later
Water can stagnate and cause rot
No nutrients unless added manually

Plant Haven Tip
Add Azos to your water to encourage faster root initiation. It supports early root development and helps your cutting establish faster.

Rooting in LECA

LECA stands for lightweight expanded clay aggregate. It is a reusable growing medium that holds moisture while allowing airflow around the roots.

Pros
Good oxygen flow
Lower risk of rot with proper care
Smoother transition to semi hydro or Pon

Cons
Needs a container with drainage
Requires more setup than water
Some plants root slower in LECA

How to use LECA/PON for propagation
Rinse and soak the LECA/Pon for at least 12 to 24 hours
Place your cutting so the node sits above the waterline
Keep humidity high and monitor the water level
Add nutrients only after roots begin to form

Plant Haven Tip
Use Azos in the reservoir to help the roots start strong. Once roots form, sprinkle Mykos directly onto the root zone when moving the cutting to its final pot. This supports long term growth and nutrient absorption.

Which one is better

Choose water if you want an easy setup or are new to propagation.
Choose LECA/Pon if you plan to grow in semi hydro or want cleaner, longer lasting results.

Both can work well with the right support.

Plant Haven Tip
We root most of our Monstera albo and Adansonii albo cuttings in LECA with Azos in the water. Once roots appear, we apply Mykos during transplant. This helps them grow faster and stay healthy from the start.
