How to Keep Your Plants Thriving While You're on Vacation
Share
Going away shouldn’t mean coming home to wilted, dying plants. With the right prep, your plants can survive - and even thrive - while you're off the grid.
1. Deep Water Before You Leave
Water thoroughly before you go. Don’t just give a surface splash - saturate the root zone so the plant has a reservoir to draw from. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to reduce moisture demand.
2. Move Them Out of Direct Sun
Less light means slower water loss. If your plants live in direct sun, move them a bit further back so they don’t dry out as quickly.
3. Use Self-Watering Solutions
Use LECA, Lechuza Pon, or self-watering pots to stretch the time between watering. These substrates retain water at the root level without drowning your plant. Add sphagnum moss to boost moisture retention if your plant prefers higher humidity.
4. Group Your Plants Together
Grouping plants creates a microclimate with higher humidity, slowing evaporation. Place them in a bathtub or large tray with a towel soaked in water for added humidity.
5. Ask for Help (Only If They Know What They’re Doing)
A friend can be helpful - or a disaster. If they’ve never taken care of plants, give them exact instructions or avoid the risk altogether with a low-maintenance setup.
